Late Comeback Falls Short for No. 7 Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey vs Cortland
WILKES-BARRE – Two goals in the third period were not enough as the No. 7 Wilkes University men's ice hockey team fell 4-3 to SUNY Cortland in non-conference action from the Toyota SportsPlex on Tuesday evening.
The Colonels fell to 9-3-0 on the season while Cortland improved to 10-5-1.
Jay Gallagher (Reading, MA/) got Wilkes on the board at 7:44 of the first period with an assist from
Tyler Dill (South Lake Tahoe, CA/).
The Red Dragons tied the score at 9:09 of the first before finding the back of the net three times in the second to lead 4-1 after two periods.
Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI/) closed the gap to 4-2 at 5:26 of the third with an assist from
Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ/) before Dill made the score 4-3 with helpers coming from
Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/) and Erickson at 19:12 of the third, but the Colonels were unable to complete the comeback.
Luc Fox (Valencia, CA/) stopped 21 shots in his first career start. Owen Zdunski made 31 saves for Cortland.
Flynn won 19-of-25 face-offs for Wilkes.
The Colonels return to the ice on Friday when they travel to Stevenson University for a 7:00 p.m. United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest.
