Late Run by Penn State Wilkes-Barre Sinks Wilkes Men's Basketball
WILKES-BARRE – A 12-0 run to end the game by visiting Penn State Wilkes-Barre was enough to overcome the Wilkes University men's basketball team 65-59 Monday night in non-conference action at the Marts Center.
With the loss Wilkes dropped to 5-11 overall. Penn State Wilkes-Barre improved to 14-2 overall with the road win.
The Colonels built a 11-2 lead over the first five minutes of action with baskets from
Drake Marshall (Gainesville, VA/Patriot),
Matthew Davidheiser (Reading, PA/Exeter Township),
Cayden Merrifield (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), and
Jackson Shafer (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley). The Mountain Lions replied with a 10-1 run to tie the game at 12-12 with 8:42 left in the first half.
Wilkes then went on a 11-0 run with eight of the points coming from
Trent Fisher (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge). The Colonels reached their largest first half lead of 12 points at 26-14 but the Mountain Lions cut the lead to five at 27-22 when the halftime horn sounded.
The Colonels came out strong at the start of the second half, scoring the first five points and built their largest lead of the game at 44-30 with 13:30 remaining on a Marshall layup. Wilkes still led by 13 with 7:41 left following another bucket from Marshall on the fastbreak.
Fisher's layup with 2:41 remaining put Wilkes ahead by six at 59-53 but it was the last points the Colonels would score in the game. Penn State Wilkes-Barre closed on a 12-0 run to take the victory 65-59.
Marshall, the reigning Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Player of the Week, led Wilkes with 23 points. Fisher recorded his third career double-double with 17 points and a career high 13 rebounds. Davidheiser added 12 points.
Kevin Major scored 20 points and Jedidiah Ashton added 15 points for Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
Wilkes returns to MAC Freedom play with a road matchup at DeSales on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
