Three First Period Goals Lift Wilkes Women’s Ice Hockey Over King’s

Three First Period Goals Lift Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Over King's

WILKES-BARRE – Elizabeth Spoon (Arlington, TX) notched two goals, including the first of her collegiate career, as the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team netted three first period goals on way to a 4-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over King's College Tuesday afternoon at the Toyota SportsPlex.

Wilkes improved to 2-13 overall and 2-11 in UCHC play. King's dropped to 1-16 overall and 1-14 in conference action. The four goals tied a season-high for the Colonels and was one shy of the school record for goals in a game when Wilkes scored five tallies in a 5-4 victory over Anna Maria in 2019.

The Colonels wasted little time taking their first lead of the game as Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ) stick-handled around two Monarch defenders and ripped a shot top shelf past the goalie 9:37 into the first period.

King's answered back tying the game thirty seconds later with an even strength tally.

Following a King's penalty, the Colonels made good on their first power-play opportunity when Rachel Morey (Buffalo, WY/) scored off assists by Abby Miller (Webster, NY) and Patterson at the 10:51 mark. Two minutes later Spoon joined the Wilkes scoring party finding the back of the net thanks to helpers from Patterson and Morey to push the advantage to 3-1 after one period of play.

Spoon added her second goal  of the game in the second, the only goal scored by either team in the frame, to extend the advantage to 4-1 after two.

King's held a 43-28 shot advantage throughout the game. Wilkes' goalie Addy Olson (Naples, FL/) finished with 42 saves earning the victory in net.

The Colonels return to the ice Saturday when they host Arcadia University at 3:30 p.m. at the Toyota SportsPlex. It will mark the first meeting between the schools.
