Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Drops 2-1 Battle to Arcadia
WILKES-BARRE, PA. – The Wilkes University Colonels women's ice hockey squad welcomed the Arcadia Knights to the Toyota SportsPlex for the two young program's first-ever matchup in the sport.
The Colonels (2-14, 2-12) battled tough with United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) foe Knights (7-11, 6-7) but Arcadia put home a game-winner at 14:55 in the third to send them home with a 2-1 victory.
After a first period with no goals and no penalties, the Knights struck first in the second period at 4:26. The Colonels responded in the third period with their second power play opportunity at 5:34, with junior
Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ) taking advantage of an opportunity in front of the Arcadia net with assists from sophomore
Rachel Morey (Buffalo, WY/) and senior
Kendall Castro (Killingworth, CT/).
The Knights would unfortunately take advantage of a perfect rebound off of a scrum on the right boards to a wide-open Emily Wilson, who slipped the puck past senior goaltender
Allyson Joly (Lincoln, RI) to put home the game-winner for Arcadia.
Arcadia outshot Wilkes 37-21, with Sophia Szelag posting 20 saves in the victory. Joly stopped 35 Arcadia shots in the loss. The Colonels put together a dominant effort in the faceoff battle, winning 38 faceoffs and losing 17.
The Colonels and Knights will meet again tomorrow at the Toyota SportsPlex for a 3:30 p.m. puck drop.
