Seven Different Players Score as Wilkes Field Hockey Earns Victory on Senior Day

EDWARDSVILLE – Wilkes University field hockey saw seven different players earn a goal today, with three players earning their first on the season, as they would win 7-1 over Bryn Athyn College on Senior Day in Saturday afternoon non-conference action at Schmidt Stadium.

Wilkes would improve to 3-11 on the year, while Bryn Athyn drops to 0-9 on the season.

Wilkes would start off the game quickly, with Devon Donley (Dauphin, PA/Bishop McDevitt) hitting Anmarie Lebron (Pennsauken, NJ /Pennsauken) near the front of the goal, where she would capitalize quickly to get an early 1-0 lead for the Colonels within the first two minutes. That would be a tone setter for the first quarter, as Wilkes outshot the Lions 10-0. Lauren Shiplett (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) would get into the action, getting a pass from Jordan Pugh (Plains, PA/James M. Coughlin) and hitting the back of the goal to give Wilkes a 2-0 lead near the end of the first. Donley would end the first with another assist, as she passed to Amber DeJonge (Grands Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Eastern), who would notch her own goal with 30 seconds left to go up 3-0.

Wilkes would take their time in the second, as the defense would not allow a single shot in the first half for Bryn Athyn. After going scoreless through most of the second, Laila Porterfield (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) would take a pass from Morgan Millard (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area) near the net and get her first goal of the season and give Wilkes a 4-0 lead to go into halftime.

The second half saw both teams begin to get offensive pushes evenly, with Wilkes looking to keep their lead advantage going. They would continue to add to their lead, as Bailey DeJesus (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) would get a rebound and get her shot in the back of the net at the 36:13 mark in the third to give Wilkes lead a 5-0 extension. Kellie Scott (Northport, ME/Kents Hill) would add to the lead, as she would score four minutes later off a rebound to make the Colonel lead 6-0 going into the fourth.

Wilkes would end their scoring day by one of their seniors, as Maura Hensel (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) would take the ball and drive to the net, passing the defenders and scoring with three minutes left in the game to go up 7-0. Wilkes would outshoot the Lions 23-5, with the Colonels earning 11 penalty corners to Bryn Athyn's three on the day. Bryn Athyn would not allow a shutout to happen as they would get a goal in the final two minutes, but Wilkes would hold onto their lead and walk away from Schmidt Stadium with a 7-1 victory.

Hensel, DeJesus, Scott, Porterfield, LeBron, Shiplett, and DeJonge would all get goals for the Colonels today. Donley led the team with two assists, with Pugh and Millard getting one apiece. Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) only allowed one goal on the day, getting two saves and keeping the Lions out of the net for the majority of the game.

Before the game, Wilkes recognized Hensel and Donley today as they honored their seniors on Senior Day.

Wilkes will return back home to Schmidt Stadium and in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action when they host FDU-Florham on Saturday at 1:00.p.m.
