Wilkes Women's Basketball Downed by No. 10 Scranton on Final Day of Cross County Challenge
WILKES-BARRE – No. 10 University of Scranton raced out to a 31-14 halftime lead and never looked back posting a 70-32 victory over the Wilkes women's basketball team on the second day of the 2022 Cross County Challenge.
Wilkes dropped to 1-3 overall following the two-day event. Scranton remained unbeaten at 5-0 on the season going 2-0 at the event. Wilkes'
Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) was named to the All-Tournament team while Scranton's Bridget Monaghan and Hannah Angelini earned all-tourney honors with Angelini also being named most valuable player (MVP).
The Royals lead grew to as many as 28 late in the third quarter outscoring the Colonels 26-9 in theframe. Scranton continued to score in transition converting Wilkes turnovers into fast break points throughout the final stanza.
Wilkes struggled shooting throughout the game finishing 13-for-54 from the field (24.1 percent) and 3-of-10 from long range.
Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) led all Colonel scorers with six points and two rebounds.
Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona),
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) and
Victoria Crooker (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) each followed with five points.
Scranton dominated in the paint scoring 36 points while converting 17 points off of Wilkes miscues. The Royals also received a boost off its bench with the reserves contributing 27 points in the contest.
Angelini topped all Scranton scorers with 14 points, five rebounds and three asissts. Maddie Hartnett followed with 13 points and six rebounds. Monaghan chipped in 11 points, six rebounds and two helpers.
The Colonels are idle through the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action on Monday, November 29 against Marywood University at 5:30 p.m. at the Marts Center.
