Late Shot Lifts Neumann Over Wilkes Women’s Basketball

Late Shot Lifts Neumann Over Wilkes Women's Basketball

WILKES-BARRE – Tera Hunt made her shot with three seconds left in the clock as Wilkes University women's basketball falls to Neumann University in non-conference action at the Marts Center.

Wilkes falls to 2-5 on the year while Neumann improves to 3-5 this season.

The game started with Wilkes going as Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona), Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee), and Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) all made their shots to begin the game as Wilkes held a one-point lead over the Knights. Brenna Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area) and Julia Marino (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) helped get their shots down to end the first period with a 12-9 lead for the Colonels.

The second saw Jacqueline Wardrop make a layup and Lindsay Holden hit three straight shots from beyond the arc to give the Knights a 20-12 lead halfway through the quarter. The Colonels would respond in fashion as they would get the next nine points as Matos had seven of them in the final five minutes to give Wilkes a 21-20 lead into halftime.

The third quarter saw the Colonels continue their offensive attack as Shober would get seven of Wilkes 15 points while Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) would make a layup and Horton making a three to extend their lead 38-22. The Knights would start to swing the tide of the game as they would score the next 11 points, six of them coming from the line as Neumann would only be down five heading into the fourth.

Julianna Askins (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) would make two threes in the fourth quarter to begin the period as Wilkes would have a 48-37 lead. Both teams would begin to trade three pointers, with Holden making one with 4:04 in the game. Evanosky would make one right after to push Wilkes forward, but Lauren Klieber would hit her own from beyond the arc while making a layup to get within three points for the Knights. Klieber and Dupont would make free throws down the stretch to tie the game up.

Matos would get a foul and go to the line, but a missed free throw and violation would halt the Colonels attempt to take the lead with 27 seconds left in the game. Terea Hunt would make her layup with three second left to give the Knights the lead. Wilkes had one last shot, but Shober's layup would not go in as Neumann would hold their lead and leave with a 53-51 victory.

Matos led the team with 14 points while having four rebounds, four assists, and four steals on the day. Horton followed behind with eight points, going 2-6 from beyond the arc, while getting five rebounds. Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) led the team with seven rebounds, adding four points in the contest. Marino dished out five assists while grabbing three rebounds and a steal.

Wilkes would shoot 35.1% from the field on the day, going 5-19 (26.3) from beyond the arc. Neumann only had a 32.7 field goal percentage, making 33.3% of their three-point shots as they went 7-21 from beyond the arc.

Wilkes will be on the road this Wednesday as they travel to DeSales University for Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) at 8:00 p.m.
