KINGSTON, PA – The Wilkes University women's tennis team opened its 2022 spring season in fine fashion posting a 7-2 victory over the University of Scranton on Saturday afternoon at TK Academy.
 
Wilkes improved to 1-0 on the season while Scranton dropped to 3-2 on the year in dual matches.
 
Scranton took No. 1 doubles by score of 8-5 before the Colonels responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 pairs. The duo of Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) and Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) took their match 8-0 at No. 2 while Kaitlyn O'Neil (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and Theresa Amerise (Mountain Top, PA/Holy Redeemer) won 8-3 at No. 3.
 
Yakhnis then scored a huge upset at No. 1 singles besting Mayjah Jean-Pierre 6-3, 7-5. Wilkes then clinched the match with wins at No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles. Zoe Klein (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) went 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 followed by Cassidy Greenman's (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) sweep at No. 4 6-0, 6-0. Cieri won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and Abby Bielecki finished off the scoring for Wilkes with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6.
 
Wilkes returns to the court next Saturday with a non-conference dual match at Ithaca College starting at 10:00 a.m.
