Missed Opportunities Doom Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey at King's
WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Wilkes University Colonels women's ice hockey squad traveled crosstown to face United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) foe King's Wednesday night.
The Colonels (3-17, 3-15 UCHC) struck first, but failed to score past that as the Monarchs (2-20, 2-16) put together two unanswered goals on their way to a 2-1 victory.
Senior
Kendall Castro (Killingworth, CT) put home the first goal of the night at 7:41 in the first off of a rebound from sophomore
Elizabeth Spoon (Arlington, TX). The Navy and Gold had chances early in the second frame, with several breakaways and a puck that stubbornly did not roll past the red line behind the King's goaltender, but the Monarchs swung momentum firmly in their favor after a series of shots at sophomore goaltender
Addy Olson (Naples, FL/) with a goal at 9:11 in the second to tie it up.
Dianna Duncan put home a beautiful game-winner at 12:57 in the third frame, blasting a puck at a perfect angle past several Colonels and Olson to take a 2-1 lead for good. The Colonels would have more opportunities, with a few more breakaways and about 26 seconds of six on five at the very end, but the Monarchs staved off every Colonel shot and earned a 2-1 home victory.
Olson recorded 29 saves in defeat, while King's goaltender Syd Dahl earned the victory with 27 saves. The Monarchs had firm command of the faceoff battle with a 31-20 advantage over the Colonels. The Colonels wrap up their 2021-22 slate with a home-and-away series with Lebanon Valley on Friday and Sunday this weekend. Puck drop for the away contest on Friday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in a series the Flying Dutchmen lead 2-1-1 over Wilkes.
