Big Run Leads Maritime Past Wilkes Women's Lacrosse
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Host Maritime College scored 13 straight goals over the first and second quarters on way to a 19-2 non-conference victory over the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field.
Wilkes fell to 0-3 overall on the season while Maritime improved to 1-0 in its season opener.
Maritime wasted little time scoring in the first minute of the game on way to nine first quarter goals. The hosts then notched four more tallies over the second 15 minute frame to take a 13-0 lead into the half.
The Colonels two goals came back-to-back early in the third quarter as
Savannah Bauman (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) and
Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) scored unassisted at the 13:25 and 10:21 mark of the frame respectively.
Maritime then went on to score three more times in the third before finishing off its scoring tear with three more strikes in the fourth quarter.
Maritime held a 30-9 shot advantage including 27 shots on Colonel goalies. Wilkes notched 11 grounds balls while Maritime posted 18.
Ashley Coughlin (Northampton, PA/Northampton) and
Courtney Mallon (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) split time in net for the Colonels each playing 30 minutes. Coughlin finished with five saves suffering the loss while Mallon had three stops while allowing six of the 19 goals. Liz Pomaro recorded the win for Maritime not allowing a goal in the first half.
Wilkes return to action Wednesday with another road matchup at Gwynedd Mercy College scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
