Second Half Run by Lycoming Leads to 70-56 Win over Wilkes Men's Basketball

WILKES-BARRE – A key run in the middle of the second half led visiting Lycoming College over the Wilkes University men's basketball team by a 70-56 score in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game at the Marts Center Wednesday night.

Wilkes dropped to 4-9 in the league and 7-14 overall with the loss. Lycoming improved to 9-4 in the MAC Freedom and 14-8 overall.

Lycoming started the game on a 7-0 run forcing a Colonels timeout. Joey Zvorsky (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) came off the bench to score and get the Colonels on the board with a layup. The teams traded points until Jackson Shafer (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) hit a three to pull Wilkes within one point at 11-10 with 12:22 left in the first half. The Warriors extended their lead back to five points at 17-12 before Wilkes went on a 9-2 run to take the lead at 21-19 with six points from Trent Fisher (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) and a three ball from Drake Marshall (Gainesville, VA/Patriot).

The Colonels then went cold for the final five minutes as Lycoming retook the lead. Derek Heirserman broke the Colonels drought with 12 seconds left with a nice post move but the Warriors beat the buzzer with a layup to finish the half on a 9-2 run to lead 28-23. Heiserman led the Colonels with seven first half points.

Wilkes began the second half on a 16-7 run to take a 39-35 lead with 14:25 remaining. Marshall scored 11 of the Colonels points during the run and Fisher scored the other five points.

The Warriors responded with the deciding run in the game with a 22-8 run over the next seven minutes to lead 57-43 with 7:04 left. Lycoming's lead grew to as many as 17 with the score standing at 64-47 with 5:05 left before Wilkes went on a quick 9-0 run to cut the lead to eight with 2:46 on the clock. Lycoming responded with a layup on the next possession and forced a turnover next to seal the game.

The Colonels were led by Marshall's 18 points and three assists. Fisher added 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Steven Hamilton led all scorers with 22 points while adding six rebounds and four assists. Dyson Harward had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while adding four blocks. Mavin James came off the bench to score 11 points for the Warriors.

Wilkes returns to action at Delaware Valley University for a conference matchup at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
