Wilkes Men’s Volleyball Takes Road Sweep against Drew

Wilkes Men's Volleyball Takes Road Sweep against Drew

MADISON, N.J.  – The Colonels men's volleyball squad hit the road for their first volleyball match in 12 days as they faced the Drew Rangers for the second time this season Wednesday evening.

The Colonels (9-15) took home a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-18, 25-22) after mounting a third set comeback against the Rangers (7-12) and snapped a six-match losing streak with their second victory over Drew this season.

The Navy and Gold took advantage of Ranger errors to break away from them after a five-all tie to start the first set to go on a 11-4 run to take a 19-9 lead.  Drew clawed back within one with a 10-4 run to close within 23-22, but the Colonels offense found the two points they needed to take the first set.  The squads exchanged small runs early to find themselves in a 13-13 tie roughly halfway through the second set.  The Navy and Gold once again found the distance they needed, taking an 8-2 run that featured three assists and a block from Paul Binner (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) to put Drew in a 21-15 hole they wouldn't recover from.

Binner started the Colonels off on the right foot in the third set, recording three of the Colonels first four points off of his kills.  The Colonels hung onto their slim advantage until Drew went on a 5-0 run to take a 14-12 advantage.  The Bears would claw their way to a 20-17 edge late in the set, but the Colonels offense came to life with another trio of Binner kills as they roared back to a 25-22 victory to clinch a clean sweep.

Binner posted a double-double with his 11 kills and 12 assists, as well as a career-high seven blocks to lead the Colonels.  Shipman recorded 15 assists and fell just shy of the double-double with nine digs.  Noah Taylor (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) led the squad with 10 digs and two service aces.  Jacob Sledz had a match-high 16 kills for Drew, while Huriel Perez had 31 assists to lead both teams.

The Colonels will continue their season-ending road swing as the Colonels travel to Dallas, Pa. for a tri-match Saturday.  They play host Misericordia in their second conference battle and third overall match this season at 12:00 p.m. before playing No. 14 St. John Fisher at 2:00 p.m.  The Colonels are 1-9 against Misericordia and have lost both matches this season, and are 0-1 against St. John Fisher.
