Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Opens MAC Freedom Play with 12-5 Victory

DOYLESTOWN, PA – Four players recorded three-or-more points as the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team opened Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play with a 12-5 victory over Delaware Valley at Lapinski Field Wednesday.

The victory is the first conference win for first year head coach Amber McCarver. The win was also the 100th in the 19-year history of the program. Wilkes is now 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the MAC Freedom following the road win and Delaware Valley dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) began the scoring with 6:51 left in the first quarter off a feed from Domenica Lerch (Northampton, PA/Northampton). The Aggies tied the game at the 5:13 mark and the score remained the same until Savannah Bauman (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) scored with 13 seconds left in the quarter to put Wilkes up 2-1. The Colonels transitioned the field quickly on the play as Allyson Joly (Lincoln, RI/The Tilton School) found an open Bauman for the goal.

Bauman made it 3-1 1:40 into the second quarter off an assist from Laura Bayzick (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) following an Aggies turnover. DelVal would tie the score a 3-3 but Devitt would complete her first half hat trick as she scored unassisted with 4:26 left and on an assist from Lerch with 2:19 on the clock as the Colonels took a 5-3 lead into the half.

The hosts scored first in the third quarter to make It 5-4 but then the Colonels put the game away with the next five goals extending into the fourth quarter.

First, Bayzick scored then Lerch followed. Bauman finished the third quarter scoring as Wilkes led 8-4.

Lerch then scored to open the fourth and Bayzick added another with 9:17 remaining as Wilkes led 10-4. Ashley Birmingham then scored her fifth goal of the game to stop the Wilkes run.

The Colonels scored the final two goals with 4:24 left and 1:52 left as Maleah Cobham (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) and Bauman found the net for the 12-5 final.

Bauman finished with four points on four goals while Lerch also had a four-point game with two goals and two assists. Devitt scored three times and Bayzick also had three points on two goals and an assist.

Lerch led the Colonels with eight draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers while Carley Yuhas (Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) followed with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Ashley Coughlin (Northampton, PA/Northampton) earned the win in net for the Colonels as she made four saves and also had three ground balls. Katie Frey made nine saves for the Aggies.

Wilkes held a 33-16 advantage in shots and 21-9 in shots-on-goal. The Colonels went 15-for-19 on clears while Delaware Valley was 15-for-24. The Colonels held a 30-14 lead in ground balls and a 12-9 edge in draw controls.

The Colonels remain on the road as they travel to FDU-Florham for a MAC Freedom matchup on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Madison, N.J.
