Seven Reach Scoring Column for Wilkes Women's Lacrosse in Loss at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team lost 16-9 at Lycoming College in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game at UPMC Field on Wednesday as seven Colonels reached the scoring column led by Savannah Bauman's (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) three points.

Wilkes dropped to 3-9 overall and to 1-4 in the conference with the loss while Lycoming improved to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the MAC Freedom.

After an early goal by the Warriors, Domenica Lerch (Northampton, PA/Northampton) scored to tie the game with 10:57 remaining in the first quarter. Lycoming scored the next two goals before Bauman hit the net with a free-position shot. A goal by the hosts with 5:17 left in the first made it 4-2, where the score stood after the first 15 minutes.

Lycoming scored two quick goals in the second quarter to go ahead by four but with 12:53 showing on the clock Sam Mullen (Dover, PA/York Catholic) scored off an assist from Bauman to make it 6-3. With 8:58 left until half, Brooklyn Pedana (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) scored with help from a pass by Breanne Fulling (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) as Wilkes closed to within two. A Lycoming goal at 3:16 was answered 18 seconds later by Laura Bayzick (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) as she scored on the free position chance to make it 7-5. The Warriors then scored the final two goals of the quarter to lead 9-5 at halftime.

The Warriors then opened the third quarter with two more goals to take a six-goal lead. Caitlin McDonough (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) scored on the free position to make it 11-6 with 12:32 on the third quarter clock. After a goal by Lycoming, Wilkes answered with two in a row to make it 12-8. First, Lerch scored her second of the game then less than a minute later Bauman notched her second of the game and 32nd of the season. Lycoming closed the quarter though with two goals in the last 25 seconds to lead 14-8.

Lycoming tacked on two more at the beginning of the fourth to take its largest lead at eight goals. Mullen would finish the scoring with her second goal of the game on the free position with 41 seconds left.

Bayzick led Wilkes with eight draw controls and added three ground balls. Lerch finished with three draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Ashley Coughlin (Northampton, PA/Northampton) made six saves for Wilkes and had a team-high four ground balls.

Lycoming was led by Kailey Stocker's six goals while Katie Maguire added three goals, two assists, six ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Zoe Stauffer earned the win with 12 saves.

Lycoming held a slight edge in shots, 31-29 and shots on goal, 22-21. Wilkes led 23-22 in ground balls and 16-13 in draw controls. Wilkes was 19-for-24 on clears and Lycoming was 22-for-29. The Colonels were 4-for-10 on free position shots and the Warriors were 3-for-6.

Wilkes will be off for the Easter holiday before returning to the field for a MAC Freedom game at Schmidt Stadium against Misericordia University next Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
