Four Scores as Wilkes Field Hockey Earns a Victory to Open 2022 Season
EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University field hockey team got scoring from four different players as they recorded a 4-0 victory over Elmira College at Schmidt Stadium on Thursday night.
The Colonels are now 1-0 to begin the season.
Wilkes kept their foot on the gas with shot on goals, as they outshot the Soaring Eagles 39-2, earning 18 penalty corners while not allowing a single attempt to Elmira.
The scoring barrage started around the 13 minute mark in the first quarter as Morgan Millard (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area) was able to get a deflection from Lauren Shiplett (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) and strike in the back of the goal for the first points of the game.
The Colonels got their second goal four minutes into the second quarter, with Shiplett hitting the corner from the top of the circle. Wilkes held onto that score for the rest of the half to go into the break up 2-0.
Wilkes kept up the momentum into the third quarter as Maura Hensel (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) joined the scoring action in the 39th minute. Hensel took a pass from Amber DeJonge (Grands Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Eastern) and was able to hit the corner of the goal.
Bridget Rosenfeld (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) rounded out the scoring in the 53rd minute in the fourth quarter, as she hit the corner of the goal from a pass by Morgan Millard (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area) near the front of the goalie.
The Colonel defense was able to keep up the pressure and make opportunities for Elmira very minimal, as the unit was able to help Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) earn her first shutout of the season.
Wilkes returns to action on Saturday when they host York for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game at Schmidt Stadium.
