Two First Half Goals Propel Wilkes Men's Soccer to Season Opening Victory

READING, PA – The Wilkes University men's soccer team used a pair of first half goals to take a 2-0 lead before a late penalty kick goal sealed the deal as the Colonels posted a 3-1 opening season victory at Penn State Berks Thursday afternoon.

Xavier Guerreiro (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) started the scoring for Wilkes just 4:45 into the match notching his first of the season when he fired a shot off the Penn State Berks keeper that fell inside the right post thanks to a helper from Will Wagstaff (Allentown, PA/Parkland).

Colin Schulmeister (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) extended the advantage at the 18:52 mark when he was fed a pass from Guerreiro that sent him free on a breakaway burying the shot inside the left post.

Penn State answered early in the second half cutting the Wilkes lead to 2-1, but Matthew Horwedel (Delanson, NY/Schalmont Senior) ended any hopes of a comeback when he was fouled in the box and calmly netted the penalty kick goal at the 67:22 mark.

Wilkes outshot Penn State Berks 17-8 while garnering five corner kicks opportunities.

Zach Tone (Easton, PA/Easton Area) earned the win in net for Wilkes making five saves.

Wilkes makes its home debut Saturday when the Colonels host Haverford College at 2:30 p.m. at Bruggeworth Field.
