Wilkes Men’s Soccer Drops to Drew University

Wilkes Men's Soccer Drops to Drew University

MADISON, N.J. - Wilkes University men's soccer team was not able to capitalize on their opportunities as they fall to Drew University 1-0.

Wilkes falls to 1-2-1 on the season, while Drew continues their season undefeated as they improve to 5-0

The first half saw opportunities appear for both teams, with neither capitalizing on them early on. The Rangers took seven shots in the first half, while the Colonels put up six of their own. A rare opportunity fell to Wilkes as Matthew Horwedel (Delanson, NY/Schalmont Senior) received a penalty kick opportunity in the 31st minute that was saved from the bottom right of the goal. Corner kicks and shots from Horwedel and Conner Maciejczyk (Allamunchy, NJ/Hackettstown) did not pass Drew's goalkeeper and kept the game scoreless. The Rangers broke the tie from a shot from the left side of the field to the bottom right of the goal to give Drew a 1-0 lead that stayed through the end of the first half.

The second half saw a similar fashion as the first, with the Rangers outshooting the Colonels 8-6. Horwedel and Maciejczyk both took opportunities at the goal that were either saved or missed their mark. Colin Schulmeister (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) also took his chance that was saved as well. Zach Tone (Easton, PA/Easton Area) did not let up in this half though, keeping the Colonels in the game with three consecutive saves around the 87th minute. Will Wagstaff (Allentown, PA/Parkland) gave one more chance for Wilkes to tie the game with a shot in the 89th minute that went well over the goal, giving the Rangers time to run the rest of the clock and take the game.

Horwedel led the team with four shots, with Maciejczyk and Wagstaff getting two shots apiece. Tone finished with four saves on the day.

Wilkes will return home to Bruggerworth Field on Tuesday as they look to face Susquehanna University at 7:00 p.m.
