Wilkes Men's Soccer Gets Two Quick Goals to Win Over Susquehanna

EDWARDSVILLE – Wilkes University men's soccer got two quick goals thirty seconds between each other to win over Susquehanna University 2-0 Tuesday night at Bruggeworth Field.

Wilkes improves to 2-2-1, while Susquehanna falls to 0-2-2 following the non-conference game.

The first half saw majority of opportunities by both teams unable to be capitalized on. Corner kicks from Wilkes did not go their favor, while goalkeeper Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) saved multiple shots during the first half.

The scoreless game was finally broken when Matthew Horwedel (Delanson, NY/Schalmont Senior) took a shot far down the field that hit the top of the goal to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead. Horwedel made sure to extend it, as he took a pass from Xavier Guerreiro (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) in front of the goal, where he gave a quick kick that went to the back right of the goal to give Wilkes a 2-0 lead heading into the half. The Colonels outshot the River Hawks 9-5 in the first half.

The second half saw Wilkes have a defensive hold on the game, as they only allowed one shot for Susquehanna while they were able to put up seven. Kinzler was able to make a save during the second half, giving him three on the day for his first start of the season.

Wilkes heads on the road Saturday when they face Rutgers-Camden at 1:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
