Wilkes Women's Soccer Falls to Scranton
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team dropped an 8-0 decision to visiting University of Scranton Tuesday night at Bruggeworth Field in non-conference action.
Wilkes dropped to 2-5-0 with the loss. Scranton, regionally ranked seventh by the United Soccer Coaches in Region V, improved to 5-1-1 on the season with the road victory.
The Royals started the game quick as Lindsay Sundheimer hit the top-left of goal from the middle of the box off an assist from Emily Bannon just 43 seconds into the match. In the 18th minute Scranton made it 2-0 as Mary Haggerty made a nice through run and received a pass from Niamh Healy, placing the shot in the lower right of goal.
Samantha Goffice scored in the box off a header after a cross was played in and a Colonel defender's clearing attempt found the head of the Royals player in the 39th minute as the first half lead went to 3-0.
Hannah Landis (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) made one save for Wilkes in the first half.
The Royals added goals in the 48th, 51st, 55th, 71st, and 77th minutes of the second half.
Lauren Sweeney (West Chester, PA/West Chester Rustin) made two saves after entering in the 52nd minute.
Kiana Jedlicka (Poughquag, NY/Arlington),
Kayla Fernandez (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area), and
Taylor Anthony (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) recorded second half shots for the Colonels.
The Colonels continue non-conference play at Hood College in Frederick, Md. on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
