Penalty Kick Goals Sink Wilkes Men's Soccer in 3-0 Defeat at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, PA – Host Moravian University scored a late penalty kick goal in the first half before notching two more tallies including another penalty kick in the second 45 minutes on way to a 3-0 non-conference victory over the Wilkes University men's soccer team Wednesday afternoon at John Makuvek Field.

Wilkes fell to 2-4-1 overall following the road defeat while Moravian improved to 2-5-1 on the season after earning the home victory.

Moravian controlled most of the first half with play in the Colonels defensive end garnering two close scoring opportunities. The first coming when Carson Snyder drilled a shot off the cross-bar at the 23:58 mark and the second opportunity off the foot of Quinn Middleton that a diving Zach Tone (Easton, PA/Easton Area) deflected away to keep the match scoreless with 2:15 left in the first half.

The hosts finally broke through when a foul was called in the box on a Wilkes defender setting up a penalty shot with :4 remaining until the break. Donald Gibbs' free try went past Tone inside the right post to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead at the half.

The Moravian lead grew to 2-0 early in the second half when Jakob Braman slotted a pass across the top of the box to Carson Snyder who deposited the goal.

Colin Schulmeister (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) had Wilkes' best opportunity to cut the lead in half at the 58:43 mark but his shot from 25 yards out hit the crossbar and bounced into a Moravian possession.

Moravian closed out the scoring with its second penalty kick goal when Ben Scary notched his fourth goal of the season at the 73:48.

Moravian held a 17-8 shot advantage while the Colonels garnered five corner kicks to the Greyhounds two attempts

Wilkes returns home to Bruggeworth Field on Saturday when the Colonels host Keystone College at 1:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
