Three Different Scorers in the First Half Lifts Wilkes Men's Soccer Over Keystone
EDWARDSVILLE – Three different players scored a goal in the first half, giving Wilkes University men's soccer a 3-0 victory over Keystone College on a Saturday afternoon at Bruggeworth field.
The Colonels improve their record to 3-4-1 on the season while the Giants fall to 1-6.
Wilkes wasted no time in putting the pressure on Keystone, pushing the pace and taking shots early on. The Colonels would get on the board in the 6th minute, as Matthew Horwedel (Delanson, NY/Schalmont Senior) took a free kick and Seth Marsteller (Coplay, PA/Whitehall) headed the ball to Colin Schulmeister (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) who kicked it to the right corner of the net.
The game would be scoreless for 14 minutes as the Colonels defense would not let any opportunity emerge for Keystone, only allowing one shot in the first half compared to Wilkes 10. Xavier Guerreiro (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) would get the Colonels back on the board in the 20th minute as he would take a pass from Owen Breisch (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood Area) and hit the top of the net to extend Wilkes lead 2-0.
Will Wagstaff (Allentown, PA/Parkland) would get a score of their own in the 30th minute as he drove down the field from a Cameron Fiester (Muncy Valley, PA/Sullivan County) pass, where Wagstaff hit the bottom left of the goal to make it 3-0 for Wilkes as they would take this lead into the end of the first half.
The second half would see both teams be aggressive towards each other, fighting for the ball and making opportunities when possible. The Colonels would continue their shooting barrage as they outshot the Giants in the second half 13-4. The Giants almost got on the scoreboard with a kick that almost fell into the net, but just hit the right crossbar and went back into the field of play.
Horwedel and Wagstaff both shot four times on the day, while Schulmeister and Andrew Slusser (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood Area) had three of their own. Zach Tone (Easton, PA/Easton Area) and Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) had one save apiece on their way to a shutout.
Wilkes will go on the road to the University of Scranton as they compete in non-conference action on Tuesday, September 27th at 7:00 p.m.
