Wilkes Field Hockey Blanks Neumann for Second Win

Wilkes Field Hockey Blanks Neumann for Second Win

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University field hockey team earned its second 4-0 win of the season as the Colonels shutout Neumann University Wednesday night at Schmidt Stadium in non-conference action.

Wilkes got goals from three different players including two by Lauren Shiplett (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) and improved to 2-4 overall with the victory. Neumann dropped to 3-4 overall with the road loss.

The Colonels had opportunities in the first quarter to open the scoring but Meg Frame made four saves and Lizzie Frame also made a defensive save during a penalty corner sequence where Wilkes put the pressure on in front of the cage. Wilkes outshot Neumann 10-2 in the first 15 minutes.

Wilkes was awarded a penalty shot following a Morgan Millard (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area) shot that was saved but the Knights were whistled for a violation that resulted in Shiplett stepping in for the penalty stroke. The graduate student buried the attempt to break the tie at the 23:43 mark for her third goal of the season.

The rest of the second quarter went scoreless but Wilkes was able to control the majority of the action and held the Knights without a shot in the quarter, as the Colonels registered seven shots of their own.

On the Colonels second penalty corner of the third quarter Abigail Davis (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) played a short pass at the top to Shiplett who then played the ball toward the cage where Amber DeJonge (Grands Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Eastern) was able to coral it and play a pass off to the right to Millard who fired one to the back of the cage for her second tally of the season. DeJonge was credited with the assist on the goal 1:37 into the third quarter.

Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) made two saves on Neumann opportunities shortly after the Colonels goal to keep the lead at two. The Colonels held a 5-2 lead in shots during the third quarter.

Bridget Rosenfeld (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) made a nice play to beat a Knights defender to the left of the cage and fired a shot to make it 3-0 at the 47:35 mark. It was the second goal of the year for the sophomore. With just over three minutes left in the game, a Rosenfeld rebound went to Shiplett who was able to put it past Frame for the Colonels fourth goal and her second of the game.

Shiplett finished with the two goals and nine total shots with six on goal for the Colonels. Rosenfeld had a goal and an assist plus six shots with five on goal and Millard finished with one goal on six total shots with five being on frame.

Eidle improved to 2-3 overall this season playing the first three quarters and making three saves. Lizzie Carter (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) played the fourth quarter in the cage for the Colonels to combine for the shutout along with the team defense and possession of the ball that Wilkes displayed on the night.

Frame made 14 saves for Neumann in defeat.

The Colonels held a 28-4 shot advantage in the game and a 20-3 shots on goal lead. Wilkes had 16 penalty corners compared to two for Neumann.

The Colonels welcome Misericordia University to Schmidt Stadium on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom contest.
