Wilkes Field Hockey Falls in MAC Freedom Game to Misericordia
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University field hockey dropped a 6-1 decision to visiting Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play at Schmidt Stadium. The Colonels had cut the Cougars lead to 2-1 in the third quarter before Misericordia scored the final four goals of the game.
Wilkes dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the MAC Freedom with the loss. Misericordia improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
The Cougars controlled much of the play in the first quarter and held a 7-1 advantage in shots following the first 15 minutes but
Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) made four saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Cougars got on the board 1:57 into the second quarter with a penalty stroke goal by Emily Ervin.
Lizzie Carter (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) entered the game to play goalie for the stroke before Eidle re-entered after to play the rest of the second quarter. At the 28:04 mark Misericordia made it 2-0 with a goal by Lily Metress. The Colonels saw more offense in the quarter as the shots were 4-3 in favor of the visitors. Eidle made two saves to bring her total to six for the game.
Carter re-entered to play the second half in the cage for Wilkes. It was a goal by
Bridget Rosenfeld (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa), 8:13 into the third quarter that pulled the Colonels to within 2-1 in the game. The sophomore was able to get her stick on a long pass in from
Morgan Millard (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area) following a foul by the Cougars and deflect the ball past the Misericordia goalie for her third goal of the season.
Misericordia answered with a goal before the end of the third quarter and three more in the fourth to pull away for the 6-1 conference win. Carter made four saves in the second half for Wilkes.
Rosenfeld led Wilkes with three shots as
Lauren Shiplett (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) followed with two. Misericordia held the shots lead in the game 21-7 and the shots on goal lead 17-3. The Cougars saw six penalty corners to the Colonels four.
Metress led Misericordia on offense with two goals and two assists while Ervin added two goals. Sarah Bogina made two saves for the Cougars to earn the win.
Wilkes hosts Ramapo College in non-conference action on Wednesday at Schmidt Stadium. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
