Wilkes Women's Soccer Falls at Marywood 3-1
SCRANTON, PA – The Wilkes University women's soccer team scored 1:32 into the game before host Marywood University rallied with the final three goals to win 3-1 at the Pacers Turf Field in non-conference action Wednesday night.
Wilkes dropped to 2-6-1 overall with the loss. Marywood improved its record to 3-5-1.
Riley McGee (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) wasted little time putting the Colonels ahead as she scored her first career goal in the second minute as the first year player struck a shot from the left side of the box that beat the Pacers goalkeeper to the far post after she collected the ball from a Marywood defender following an attacking play by
Cesia Diaz (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). Diaz earned her second assist of the season on the play.
In the 26th minute the Pacers tied the game with a header goal by Brooke Longstreet off a designed corner kick play. Five minutes later Marywood gained the lead off a cross from outside the box on the left side that landed at the six-yard box in front of goal to be put away by Carly Walters for the 2-1 lead.
The game went to halftime with the hosts leading 2-1 and holding a 10-5 lead in shots.
Lauren Sweeney (West Chester, PA/West Chester Rustin) made five saves in the first half for Wilkes.
Shots by
Erica Feese (State College, PA/State College Area) and
Kiana Jedlicka (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) were saved in the 48th and 55th minutes. In the 63rd minute an
Alex Holmstrom (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) shot was saved by a defender as the Colonels were pressing for the tying goal in the early stages of the second half.
Marywood extended the lead in the 64th minute as Josephine Sorce found the back of the net to make it 3-1.
Katie Sites (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford Area) in the 68th, Diaz in the 69th,
Kayla Lopez (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) in the 81st, and
Madison Straub (Franklin, NJ/Franklin) in the 87th minute all had shots on goal that were saved by the Pacers goalkeeper as Rebekah Becker made the 3-1 score stand as the final.
Sweeney finished with seven saves for the Colonels in her second start of the season. Becker made nine saves in the win for Marywood.
In the second half the Colonels outshot the Pacers 12-5. Wilkes held a slim 17-15 lead in shots for the game and an 11-10 advantage in shots on goal. Wilkes also led in corner kicks 7-6 at the final horn.
The Colonels open Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play hosting DeSales University on Saturday at Bruggeworth Field. The Homecoming contest starts at 1:00 p.m.
