Wilkes Women's Soccer Explodes in 6-1 Victory Over Penn College

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team had six different scorers on the day as they took control of the game from start to finish with a 6-1 victory over Penn College in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Bruggeworth Field.

The Colonels would go to 1-1, while Penn College drops to 0-2.

The Colonels started off hot and quick with the scoring as Kayla Lopez (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) started off the scoring with 1:53 into the game. Kiana Jedlicka (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) found Lopez on the opposite side of the field and capitalized on the opportunity. After Penn College tied it up around the five-minute mark, Lopez dished out a quick pass to Madison Straub (Franklin, NJ/Franklin) who gave Wilkes the lead again in the sixth minute.

Alex Holmstrom (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) would work her way on the scored board, as she took a corner kick from Olivia Ricci (Millstone, NJ/Allentown) and scored in the 19th minute. Wilkes would hold on the lead heading into the half, as the Colonels would outshoot the Wildcats 18-5 in the first half. Hannah Landis (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) kept the lead intact when she saved a possible one on one shoot in the 30th minute.

The second half was very much the same as the end of the first. Both teams held the other without a score for 35 minutes, with both defensive units and goalkeepers holding strong. The Colonels eventually broke that drought when Lauren Lefchak (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) and Taylor Anthony (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) both scored goals ten seconds from each other in the 82nd minute to extend the Colonels lead.

Madison Whitesell (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Coulmbia) would close out the scoring barrage as she got the bottom left of the net in the 88th minute to give Wilkes its first victory of the season. The Colonels outshot the Wildcats 32-7, with the defense only allowed three shots on goal.

Wilkes looks to keep the winning momentum going as they host William Paterson University on Tuesday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
