Wilkes Field Hockey Drops 3-0 Decision to DeSales

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University field hockey team dropped a 3-0 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game to start Homecoming weekend Friday night at Schmidt Stadium.

Wilkes fell to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in MAC Freedom play with the loss. DeSales went to 7-2 overall and stayed perfect in the conference at 3-0.

The Bulldogs controlled much of the first quarter of action in the Colonels defensive end but were unable to score on 10 shots. Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) made six saves and Lauren Shiplett (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) made a defensive save when the Bulldogs got behind Eidle on a breakaway to keep DeSales off the scoreboard. Anmarie Lebron (Pennsauken, NJ /Pennsauken) had two shots in the final minute for Wilkes but one was blocked and the other went just wide before the first 15 minute horn sounded.

In the second quarter at the 21:13 mark the Bulldogs scored to go ahead 1-0 following a penalty corner. Catie McGrath's initial shot was saved by Eidle but the rebound went off her pads where Maddie Trocki stopped the ball for McGrath to find the back of the cage with a second shot. The Bulldogs led the second quarter in shots 3-0 as they went to half with a 1-0 lead.

Each team generated just one shot in the third quarter with Shiplett having the opportunity for Wilkes and a DeSales chance going just wide of the cage.

Maura Hensel (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) made a defensive save for Wilkes to keep the Colonels within a goal three minutes into the fourth quarter. At the 48:13 mark DeSales extended its lead when Gace DeThomas scored. Tyra Wingle made it 3-0 at the 49:47 mark.

Eidle made 12 saves in the cage for Wilkes while Kayla Yeatman made two saves in the win for DeSales.

DeSales led 23-5 in shots and 17-2 in shots on goal. The Bulldogs had eight penalty corners to the Colonels two.

The Colonels head back into non-conference play with a game at Cedar Crest College on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. in Allentown, Pa.
