Wilkes Field Hockey Drops 3-1 Decision at Elizabethtown
 
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – Host Elizabethtown College took a 2-0 lead early in the third quarter and added an insurance tally later in the fourth on way to a 3-1 non-conference victory over the Wilkes University field hockey team Wednesday afternoon at Wolf Field.
 
Wilkes fell to 1-2 on the young season following the road defeat while Elizabethtown improved to 2-1 overall on the year. It marked the first contest away for the Colonels who opened the 2022 season with back-to-back games at Schmidt Stadium.
 
Grace Hardy struck first for Elizabethtown notching an unassisted goal six minutes into the second quarter. The Blue Jays lead grew to 2-0 eight minutes into the third quarter when Drew Bridges found the back of the cage.
 
Amber DeJonge (Grands Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Eastern) cut the deficit in half for Wilkes when she scored her first goal of the season with :31 left in the third.
 
Wilkes garnered back-to-back penalty corners early in the fourth quarter but were unable to find the tying strike. Chloe Smith put the game away for Elizabethtown when she scored with just over three minutes remaining to give the hosts a two-goal advantage.
 
Wilkes outshot Elizabethtown 11-9 including 10 shots on goal. The Blue Jays totaled nine penalty corners to Wilkes' seven attempts.
 
Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) made five saves in net for the Colonels.
 
Wilkes returns to non-conference action Saturday traveling to Alvernia University for a matchup scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
