Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Drops to Manhattanville
 
RYE, N.Y. – The Wilkes women's ice hockey team dropped 4-1 to the Manhattanville Valiants in a road United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game on Friday night.
 
Wilkes falls to 3-9-1 overall and 3-6-1 in conference play. Manhattanville improves to 8-6-1 on the season and 8-2-1 in the UCHC.
 
The Colonels were able to net one early in the first period when Anneke Bouma (Newcastle, ON) found the goal during a powerplay at 2:59. The Valiants answered back at 11:01 with a goal by Brysha Schmidt, and again at 14:14 with a goal from Catrina Chinetti, leading Wilkes at the end of the first period 2-1. Bouma had the only two shots of the period for Wilkes. Goalkeeper Emma Swansburg (Shelburne, NS) got her first start for the Colonels and ended the period with 17 saves.
 
Manhattanville had 25 shots in the first period, and goaltender Jewells Austin had one save.
 
Wilkes was able to pick up their offensive play in the second period and also keep Manhatanville from the goal, ending the period adding nine more shots, but still down 2-1. Emma Bresett (Davidson, NC) and Bouma led in shots for the Colonels, each having two. They were followed by Abigail Davis (Mountain Top, PA), Abby Miller (Webster, NY/), Rachel Morey (Buffalo, WY/), Emma Guzdek (Amherst, NY/), and Bella Kaczorowski (Anchorage, AK) who each had one. Swansburg ended the period with nine saves.
 
The Valiants had 15 shots in the second period and Austin had four saves.
 
At 8:39 into the third period Manhattanville scored their third goal of the game, and struck again at 16:32, securing their 4-1 win over Wilkes. Savanna Maxon (Anchorage, AK) was able to get three shots off for the Colonels in the period, but none of them could make it through. Guzdek and Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ/) were also each able to get a shot off. Swansburg finished out the final period adding 11 more saves.
 
In her first career start for the Colonels, Swansburg ended the game with a total of 37 saves, giving her a save percentage of 90.2%. Austin had a total of eight saves for the Valiants, with a save percentage of 88.9%.
 
Wilkes won 19 of 47 faceoffs, with Morey winning 10, Kaczorowski winning six, Kiera Lacombe (Buckeye, AZ/) winning two, and Elizabeth Spoon (Arlington, TX) winning one. Manhattanville won 28 of 47 faceoffs.
 
The Colonels had a total of nine shots on goal in the game with Bouma, Bresett, and Maxon each earning two. Maxon earned three blocks in the game followed by Patterson and Abigail Barcless (Hamilton, NJ) who each had two. The Valiants had a total of 41 shots on goal as well as four blocked shots.
 
The Wilkes women's ice hockey team will return to the ice again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. where they look to split the series with Manhattanville in another UCHC matchup in Rye, N.Y.
