Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Down by Alvernia 3-0
WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Alvernia University scored one goal in each of the three periods on way to a 3-0 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team Friday night at the Toyota SportsPlex.
Wilkes fell to 3-11-1 overall and 3-8-1 in UCHC play. Alvernia improved to 8-5-3 overall and 8-3-1 in conference contests following the road victory.
The teams played an even first period with Alvernia holding a 21-11 shot advantage. The Golden Wolves broke through for the first goal of the contest with :49 left in the period when Abby Reisinger scored off a faceoff.
Alvernia added its second goal at the 14:18 mark of the second period as Sydney Bradley notched an even-strength goal.
Wilkes' best scoring chance came in the third period when
Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ/) was saved on a wrist shot skating in from the right side as the puck laid behind the goalie before the play was whistled dead. Alvernia scored its final goal with 2:05 left in the game when Amber Steinhilpert found the back of the net on the power-play.
Alvernia held a 53-45 shot advantage.
Emma Swansburg (Shelburne, NS) made 28 saves for the Colonels. Julia Beaven finished with 23 saves to record the win in net for Alvernia.
The two teams will finish the season series tomorrow in Reading, Pa. with a UCHC matchup at 2:00 p.m.
