Second, Third Period Goals Lift Alvernia over Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey 5-1

READING, PA – Host Alvernia University broke open a one goal game scoring three unanswered goals over the second and third periods on way to a 5-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team Saturday afternoon.

Wilkes dropped to 3-12-1 overall and 3-9-1 in UCHC play. Alvernia improved to 9-5-3 overall and 9-3-1 in conference contests following the home victory.

Alvernia raced out to a 2-0 lead scoring goals at the 16:31 and 17:32 marks of the first period. Wilkes responded cutting the lead in half when Bella Kaczorowski (Anchorage, AK) notched her eighth strike of the season on the power play thanks to assists from Rachel Morey (Buffalo, WY/) and Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ/).

The Golden Wolves then scored two goals in the second, one on the power play at 18:33 and another even strength at 18:49, then added an insurance tally in the final frame just 1:36 in to seal the season sweep.

Alvernia outshot Wilkes 57-41 including 33-29 on goal. The Golden Wolves scored three of their five goals on the power-play finishing 3-for-8 on the man-up advantage.

Emma Swansburg (Shelburne, NS) made 28 saves in net for Wilkes while Julia Beaven notched 28 stops in the win for Alvernia.

The Colonels return to the ice Wednesday when they host cross-town rival King's College in a UCHC matchup scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the Toyota SportsPlex. The two teams tied 2-2 earlier in the season in a contest played at the Revolution Ice Center.
