Wilkes Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Stevens
HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Wilkes University women's basketball team fell 66-39 against the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks, who are ranked No. 22 in the nation by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), at the Canavan Arena on Wednesday night.
The Colonels record fell to 3-10 overall and 2-2 in conference play following the road loss. The Ducks improved to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in conference.
The first quarter was a slow start for both teams, with the Colonels getting their first bucket of the game with 1:11 left. They ended the quarter trailing Stevens with a score of 11-4. First year
Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) and junior
Julia Marino (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) each earned two points for Wilkes. Danielle Cornetta led the Ducks in points having seven in the first quarter.
Marino kicked off the second quarter for the Colonels with a made free throw. First year
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) had three good free throws in the second quarter as well as a layup, finishing the half with five points for the Colonels. Junior
Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) also got on the board for Wilkes with a layup, bringing the Colonels to finish out the half with Stevens leading 26-12.
Wilkes was able to rack up 13 points in the third quarter, four of which came from senior
Brenna Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area). Matos aided in the Colonels effort earning three points in the quarter, with a total of eight points for her in the first three quarters. The Ducks didn't slow down, going into the fourth quarter holding the lead against the Colonels 46-25.
Babcock earned the first points of the final quarter with a layup at 9:17 and ended the game with four points in the quarter. Shober earned four points in the quarter as well with two free throws and a layup. The Ducks earned 22 points in the fourth quarter, securing their 66-39 victory against the Colonels.
Matos and Babcock led the Colonels in points, each of them finishing the game with eight. They were followed by Marino who had seven, along with two assists, and Shober who had six. First year
Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) made a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, finishing out the game with five points for Wilkes.
Elissa Nsenkyire led the Ducks in points with 17 total, followed by Jess Broad with 15, and Cornetta with 12. Leyla Castro led Stevens in assists with four.
Wilkes had a FG% of 29.2% and Stevens had a FG% of 34.8%. The Colonels had 26 of their points come from in the paint and the Ducks had 28 points in the paint.
The Wilkes women's basketball returns to the court on Saturday when they travel to Glenside, Pa. to take on the Arcadia Knights at 1:00 p.m.
