Third Period Surge Sends Chatham to Victory Over Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey
WILKES-BARRE – Scoring four goals in the third period, the Chatham University Cougars secured a 6-3 win over the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team in their second matchup in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play Saturday evening at the Toyota SportsPlex.
The Colonels fell to 3-8-1 on the season and 3-5-1 in UCHC play. The Cougars improved to 7-7-1 overall and 6-3-1 in conference, following their weekend sweep of Wilkes.
The first period was evenly played, with neither team being able to get one in the net.
Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ/) and
Emma Bresett (Davidson, NC) led the Colonels in shots in the first period, each of them having two. Junior goaltender
Addy Olson (Naples, FL/) had 14 saves in the period, not allowing any goals for the Cougars.
Allison Corser-James, Samantha Barret, and Lauren Carmody each had two shots for Chatham in the first period, and goalkeeper Lily Rogers had 10 saves.
Chatham was first to put a goal away, scoring 5:18 into the second period.
Abby Miller (Webster, NY/) answered back for the Colonels when she found the net at 12:17 and was assisted by Bresett and
Emma Guzdek (Amherst, NY/). Before the end of the second period, the Cougars snuck another one past the Colonels during a power-play at 14:39.
Rachel Morey (Buffalo, WY/) had the most shots of the Colonels in the second period, followed by Guzdek who had two. Olson finished out the period with 12 saves.
Ally Nolan led the Cougars in shots in the second period with four, followed by Brooke Almond who had three. Rogers added 10 more saves in the second period.
Wilkes started the third period off strong with
Elizabeth Spoon (Arlington, TX) scoring the first goal of the period, tying the score up at two at 8:17. Not even a minute later, the Colonels took the lead at 9:10 when Bresett put away their third goal of the game. In the span of five minutes Chatham scored three goals and put away a fourth at 18:27 on an empty net securing their 6-3 win over Wilkes. Patterson, Bresett, and
Savanna Maxon (Anchorage, AK) each had two shots for the Colonels in the third period. Olson recorded nine saves in the final period.
Nolan and Corser-James led in shots in the third period for the Cougars, both of them having three, followed by Rainey Jessup who had two. Rogers finished the final period with 11 saves.
Morey, Bresett, and Patterson had the most total shots for the Colonels with five apiece. They were followed by Maxon, Guzdek, and
Quinn Rodefeld (Blaine, MN/) who each had three. Guzdek led Wilkes in assists with two, and
Anneke Bouma (Newcastle, ON), Bresett, and Rodefeld each had one. Morey won 18 of her 38 faceoffs,
Kiera Lacombe (Buckeye, AZ/) won six of her 16, and Spoon won five of her six. Olson ended the game with 35 saves total.
Nolan was on top for Chatham in shots having seven on the game, followed by Corser-James who had six. Almond and Corser-James each had two assists for the Cougars. Rogers ended the game with a total of 31 saves.
The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team hits the ice again on January 13 at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Rye, N.Y. to take on Manhattanville College in another UCHC series.
