Late Penalty Kick Gives Wilkes Men's Soccer 2-2 Draw Against Scranton
EDWARDSVILLE – Trailing 2-1 with under two minutes left in the game,
Colin Schulmeister (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) was fouled inside the box and calmly snuck the penalty shot past the goalie as the Colonels settled for a 2-2 draw against visiting University of Scranton in Landmark Conference play Tuesday night at Bruggeworth Field.
Wilkes moved to 3-4-5 overall and 1-2-2 in Landmark play. Scranton moved to 6-2-4 and 0-2-3 in league matches.
Wilkes got on the board first when
Grant Gerstner (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley High School) sent a ball through the left side finding the foot of Schulmeister who deposited into the back of the net giving the Colonels a 1-0 lead 1:45 into the first half.
Wilkes had a few more scoring chances in the first half but was unable to add to the lead. Scranton only mustered four shots in the opening half, with its best chance stopped by
Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) on a redirected shot from top of the box.
Scranton looked to tie the game early in the second half but a point-blank shot by the Royals was saved by a diving Kinzler to keep the Colonels ahead by one goal with 36:54 left on the clock.
Scranton finally found the goal at 34:49 when Ciaran Corr collected a ball in the center of the box and maneuvered past two Colonel defenders before drilling a shot past Kinzler tying the game at one. Just :24 seconds later Corr struck again taking a ball down the right side dribbling around a defender and sending a shot past a sprawling Kinzler to the top left corner of the goal to give the Royals a 2-1 lead.
Andrew Slusser (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood Area) had a great chance with under 20 minutes left in the game, but a deflected shot off a direct kick was stopped by the Royals goalie preserving Scranton's one-goal advantage. Gerstner had another great opportunity for Wilkes, but his shot from top of the box was saved by a diving Royals keeper with 4:44 remaining.
Wilkes continued to press on offense setting up the Schulmeister foul in the box and subsequent penalty shot opportunity.
Scranton held a 17-14 shot advantage while garnering five corner kicks to Wilkes' three attempts.
Kinzler finished with six saves for Wilkes while Charlie Smith made seven stops for Scranton.
Wilkes continues Landmark play Saturday with a road matchup at Elizabethtown College at 1:00 p.m.
