Three Second-Half Goals Lead Scranton to 4-0 Victory Over Wilkes Women's Soccer
SCRANTON – Despite a six-save performance by goalkeeper
Hannah Landis (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen), the Wilkes University women's soccer team dropped their Landmark Conference match to the University of Scranton by a score of 4-0 on Tuesday night at Weiss Field.
The loss brought the Colonels' overall record to 3-5-4 while their Landmark record fell to 1-3-1. Scranton, who entered the contest ranked number 5 in the United Soccer Coaches Region V poll, improved to 8-2-3 on the season. They remain perfect in conference play at 5-0-0.
Landis made a trio of saves within the first 18 minutes of action to prevent the Royals from taking an early lead. Scranton's relentless pressure finally produced a goal at 32:49 when Linda Daly potted her second of the season to give the Royals a 1-0 advantage.
The Colonels were able to keep Scranton at bay for the remainder of the first half and the score held firm at 1-0 going into the break.
Seven minutes into the second half, the Royals would double their lead when Emily Bannon crossed a ball over to Mary Haggerty, who sent a shot past Landis to make it a 2-0 game at 51:25. Scranton would add to their lead just over six minutes later when Emily Tantala scored at 57:31.
The Colonels' best scoring opportunity of the night came at 61:33 when
Lauren Lefchak (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) fired a shot that was earmarked for the top-left corner of the goal, however Royals goalkeeper Nicole Olson stood tall and made the save.
Scranton would tack on one more goal at 69:33 thanks to a shot by Claire Mulholland that found the back of the net. Morgan Griffin collected an assist on Mulholland's second of the season. The 4-0 score would hold for the remainder of the game.
Lefchak recorded the Colonels' lone shot on goal, while Landis made six saves in the loss.
Samantha Goffice led the Royals with eight shots, while Haggerty, Daly, Tantala and Mulholland all tallied goals on the evening. Olson and Kaitlyn Torres put together a combined shutout win for Scranton.
The Colonels will hit the road once again on Saturday when they travel to Elizabethtown College for a 4:30 p.m. Landmark matchup with the Blue Jays.
