Three Late Goals Send Landmark Leader Scranton Past Wilkes Field Hockey in Close Game

SCRANTON, PA – The Wilkes University field hockey team was tied 1-1 with Landmark Conference leader and host the University of Scranton on Wednesday night at Weiss Field before the Royals scored three goals in the final seven minutes for a 4-1 win.

Wilkes dropped to 2-3 in Landmark Conference games and to 7-6 overall with tonight's loss. Scranton remained unbeaten in conference play at 5-0 and improved to 11-2 overall.

The Royals had the majority of the offensive play in the first quarter, finishing with five total shots but senior goaltender Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) was up to the task as she made three saves in the quarter to keep the game scoreless.

Scranton gained the lead seven minutes into the second quarter following a penalty corner when Katie Redding scored off an assist from Cori Davis. That shot was the only one of the quarter as the Royals went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Eidle started the third quarter by making two consecutive saves which allowed Wilkes to find its offense. The Colonels earned a penalty corner at 35:06 which saw Maura Hensel (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) insert the initial pass to Morgan Millard (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area). Millard then found Caitlin Keim (Trevorton, PA/Line Mountain) at the top of the circle and her shot went off of Hensel at the near post and directly out in front of the Royals goal where Morgan Hermanofski (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest Area) slammed it home to tie the game at the 35:17 mark. It was Hermanofski's team-leading eighth goal of the season and the third assist for Hensel.

Scranton pressured the Colonels cage again as Eidle made another save and the Royals hit the post less than two minutes after the Colonels goal. To close the third quarter Millard registered two shots for the Colonels with both ending up off target as Wilkes looked to take the lead.

The fourth quarter began with Cortney Keim (Trevorton, PA/Line Mountain) making a defensive save to keep the game tied at the 47:34 mark. It was her 13th defensive save of the season which tied her for the NCAA Division III lead entering today's games.

Redding broke the tie with her second of the game at the 53:40 mark off an assist from Maggie Keys. Eidle made another save but the rebound went to Annie Shaw who scored to make it 3-1 at the 57:18 mark. Scranton added the final goal with one minute left as Keys scored off an assist from Reagan Dolan.

The Royals led 17-3 in total shots and 12-1 in shots on goal. Scranton earned nine penalty corners to five for Wilkes.

Eidle tied her season high with seven saves which allowed her to pass the 300 save milestone for her career as she now has 301.

Gianna Travia did not make a save for Scranton in the victory.

Wilkes returns to action on Saturday for Senior Day as the Colonels play host to Elizabethtown College at Schmidt Stadium. Gametime is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in the Landmark Conference game.
