Wilkes Men's Volleyball Ties Record for Most Wins in a Season After Two Tri-Match Wins
 
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's volleyball team added two wins on the season against the Bryn Athyn Lions 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-11) and the John Jay Bloodhounds 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-21, 25-13) in a non-conference tri-match on Sunday to tie the program record for wins in a season with 10.
 
The Colonels improve to 10-3 overall in the season. The Lions move to 1-7 on the season, and the Bloodhounds move to 3-2 overall.
 
Wilkes started out the day against Bryn Athyn College. The first set was close, but with kills from Matthew Molnar (South Abington Township, PA/Abington Heights), Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central), and Jacob Haller (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Township), the Colonels were able to come back and claim the set. Wilkes had nine kills in the set, led by L. Mages with three. Casey Shipman (Hershey, PA/Hershey) tallied nine assists in the set.
 
The Lions had seven kills in the first set and seven assists.
 
The Colonels had more of an edge in the second set, claiming it 25-18. Kicked off by a kill from Jackson Shafer (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley), Wilkes was able to go on a six-point run which gave them a lead that they maintained to the end of the set. The Colonels had 12 kills in the second set, led by Shafer with four. Zach Shay (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) had nine assists in the set.
 
Bryn Athyn had six kills in the second set and six assists.
 
Wilkes dominated in the third set, claiming it comfortably with a score of 25-11. The Colonels were able to go on two four-point runs kicked of by kills from Haller and Paul Binner (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock). Wilkes added 13 kills in the third set, led by Shafer with five. Shipman added 10 assists in the set.
 
The Lions had four kills in the third set and four assists.
 
Wilkes had a total of 34 kills in the match, led by Shafer with 10, followed by Haller with six, and Binner with five. Shipman led the Colonels in assists in the match with 19, followed by Shay with nine and Shafer with two. Binner, Shipman, and Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) each had a block in the match for Wilkes. Haller earned six digs followed by Alex Derk (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) with five and Shipman with three.
 
Bryn Athyn had 17 kills in the match and 15 assists.
 
After sweeping Bryn Athyn, the Colonels took on John Jay. The first set was a comfortable claim for Wilkes, taking it 25-17. The score was tied up four times, but the Colonels were able to hold their lead after a kill from Binner broke the tie. Wilkes had eight kills in the first set and Shay had eight assists.
 
John Jay had 13 kills in the first set.
 
In the second set, Wilkes was unable to come back after the Bloodhounds went on a six-point run. The Colonels added 11 more kills in the second set, and Shay added eight assists.
 
The Bloodhounds had nine kills in the second set.
 
The third set was close with John Jay and Wilkes gaining points back and forth, but the Colonels were able to take the set 25-21. Wilkes had eight kills in the set and Shay added six assists.
 
John Jay added 14 kills in the third set.
 
The Colonels dominated in the fourth set, going on a five-point run kicked off by a kill from L. Mages. Wilkes added 14 kills in the set, and Shay tallied 10 assists in the set.
 
The Bloodhounds had six kills in the fourth set.
 
Wilkes had a total of 41 kills in the match, led by Shafer with 15, followed by L. Mages with nine and Noah Taylor (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) with eight. Shay earned 33 assists for the Colonels, followed by Binner and Shafer each with one. Binner led Wilkes in blocks in the match with seven, followed by L. Mages with six and Shay with two. Shafer had six digs followed by Sam Winter (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) with five and Shay with three.
 
John Jay had 42 kills in the match and 41 assists.
 
The Wilkes men's volleyball team returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Chambersburg, Pa. to take on Wilson College at 7:00 p.m. for a non-conference match.
