Misericordia Outlasts Wilkes Women's Basketball in Overtime 63-57
DALLAS, PA – Despite
Brianna Horton's (Verona, NJ/Verona) game-tying three-pointer as time expired in regulation, host Misericordia University outscored the Wilkes University women's basketball team 10-4 in the overtime session on way to a 63-57 MAC Freedom victory Wednesday night at the Anderson Center.
Wilkes dropped to 6-16 overall and 5-8 in MAC Freedom play. Misericordia improved to 16-6 overall and 9-4 in league games.
With the game tied at 47, Misericordia scored a layup on an inbounds underneath its own basket to take a two-point advantage with :12 remaining in regulation. Wilkes used a timeout to advance the ball to its offensive end, but the inbound pass was deflected and the Colonels were forced to foul following the turnover. After two Misericordia free throws,
Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) drilled a three-pointer with :4 left to cut the deficit to one. After another Wilkes foul and subsequent Misericordia free throws, the Colonels called their final timeout of the game to advance the ball and setup the game-tying play. From there it was Horton's heroics that tied the game as the senior connected on a deep trey from the top of the circle to send the game to the extra period.
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) gave Wilkes its only lead of the overtime frame connecting on two free throws to put the Colonels ahead 55-53 with 4:39 on the clock. Misericordia answered with five straight points to take a three-point lead before a driving layup from Evanosky pulled Wilkes to within one trailing 58-57 with 2:57 left. Back-to-back buckets from Alyssa Bondi pushed the Cougars lead to 62-57 and two consecutive Wilkes turnovers halted any type of second comeback attempt for the Colonels.
Wilkes raced out to a 12-6 lead after one quarter of play as
Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) connected on back-to-back buckets and Matos scored in transition to cap off the Colonels scoring in the opening frame.
The Colonels continued to lead throughout the second quarter as Misericordia came to within two points three times throughout the stanza.
Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), Matos and Shober all scored in the frame before a
Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) layup put Wilkes ahead 24-20 at the break.
Matos led four Colonels in double figures finishing with 13 points including a 7-for-8 performance at the charity stripe. Evanosky came off the bench to score 12 points while Horton (11) and Shober (10) rounded out the double-figure scorers for Wilkes. Shober added 10 rebounds and six blocks.
Skylar Dowling topped all Misericordia scorers with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
Wilkes returns home Saturday to host Arcadia University in a MAC Freedom matchup at 1:00 p.m. at the Marts Center where the Colonels will celebrate Senior Day.
