EDWARDSVILLE – Maleah Cobham (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) scored four goals and added one assist to lead the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team to a 10-8 non-conference victory over visiting Gwynedd-Mercy University Wednesday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.

Wilkes notched its second straight win improving to 2-1 on the season while Gwynedd-Mercy dropped to 2-2 on the year.

The Griffins scored the first two goals of the game before Breanne Fulling (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) notched her third goal of the season to cut the visitors lead in half with 11:29 left in the first quarter. After another Gwynedd-Mercy goal, Cobham struck for her first of the game thanks to a pass from Brooklyn Pedana (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) with 9:00 on the clock. Cobham then finished off the scoring for the Colonels in the opening frame scoring off an assist from Cailtin McDonough to keep Wilkes close trailing 4-3 after one.

Pedana called her own number early in the second quarter tying the game at four with an unassisted strike with 9:32 left in the half. Wilkes took its first lead of the contest one minute later when Alexis Guttilla (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) scored from Fulling then added to its advantage before the half ended as Pedana scored on the man-up giving the Colonels a 6-4 lead at the break.

Cobham scored back-to-back to start the third quarter, the first coming unassisted and the second with a  helper from Abby Miller (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) as Wilkes pushed the lead to 8-4 with 11:41 on the clock.

Fulling added a free position goal before two unanswered goals from Gwynedd-Mercy kept the Colonels ahead 9-7 with just over three minutes left in the third. McDonough closed out the scoring for Wilkes in the quarter and the game with a goal off an assist from Cobham to finish the third with the Colonels leading 10-7.

The Griffins added one goal in the fourth with six minutes remaining, but Colonels goalie Samantha Scott (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) came up big time after time with strong saves on free position attempts as well in live play to preserve the non-league win for Wilkes.

Fulling and Pedana followed Cobham with three points on two goals and one assist each while McDonough added two points on one goal and one helper. Scott finished with 13 saves to record the win in goal for Wilkes.

Kristin Varilla led all scorers with five points on five goals for the Griffins. Reilly Owens made five saves in net suffering the defeat.
