Bryn Athyn Holds Off Wilkes Women's Lacrosse

BRYN ATHYN, PA – The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team kept it close to two goals in the fourth period but were unable to score as they fell to Bryn Athyn College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at General Ronald K. Nelson Field. 

The Colonels would drop to 3-6 on the season. The Lions would extend their winning streak to three games as they improved to 3-1 on the year.  

The game began with Bryn Athyn getting ahead early as Sabrina Rock scored with 2:30 into the game as Wilkes would be down 1-0. The Colonels would respond quickly as Breanne Fulling (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) got an unassisted goal at the 11:40 mark of the first period to tie the game 1-1. The Lions would get the next three scores at the 9:13, 4:58, and 2:31 mark in the game to go up 4-1. Maleah Cobham (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) would get a goal with 38 seconds before the end of the period to go into the second down 4-2. 

Wilkes would get back on the board under a minute into the second with Sydney Bernardi (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) getting a goal with a man up to make it 4-3. The Lions would keep up their attack and make it 5-3 at the 11:38 mark. Both teams would be scoreless for the next seven minutes until Sam Mullen (Dover, PA/York Catholic) scored with a man down to head into the half only behind 5-4. 

The third quarter would still have the Colonels down a man, but Emilee Magill (North Prairie, WI/Kettle Moraine Global) would still find the back of the net at the 11:52 mark to tie the game up at 5-5. Bryn Athyn would regain the lead 22 seconds later, but Mullen would even it up once more at the 10:26 mark as the game was tied at 6-6 nearing the finish of the third quarter. The Lions would eventually find the goal at the 2:30 mark with a man up to make it 7-6 heading into the fourth.  

Bryn Athyn would finish their attack at the 11:52 mark in the final quarter as Maria Storck would score with a man down to extend the lead with a man down for the Lions. Wilkes would only be held to one shot after the Lions goal, falling to Bryn Athyn 8-6 in the matchup. 

Wilkes would outshoot Bryn Athyn 19-18, with the Colonels saving five of the shots. Bryn Athyn would have seven saves. Wilkes had 10 draw controls to Bryn Athyn's eight, but the Lions would earn 37 ground balls to the Colonels 21. 

Mullen had two goals on the day for the Colonels while Magill, Cobham, Bernardi, and Fulling all had one apiece. Fulling had five draw controls on the day and four ground balls, leading Wilkes in each category. Samantha Scott (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) finished with five saves on the day. 

Wilkes will continue to be on the road as they head to face Arcadia University in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) competition this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
