Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Downed by Arcadia 

GLENSIDE, PA – The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team scored four straight goals in the first quarter, but would not keep their momentum as they fell to Arcadia University 15-8 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) competition on Wednesday night at Jean Lenox West Field and Delran Pavilion.

The Colonels would fall to 3-7 this season, dropping their conference opener and going 0-1 while Arcadia improves 4-6 on the year and going 1-0 in MAC Freedom action.

The first quarter would see the Knights jump out to a quick 2-0 lead as they would find the back of the net at 12:31 and 11:52 marks into the matchup. The Colonels would begin to respond with their four straight goals with Caitlin McDonough (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) beginning the scoring barrage as she scored at the 11:00 mark. Brooklyn Pedana (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) would follow behind with a free position goal at the 9:18 mark. Maleah Cobham (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke)  and Sydney Bernardi (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) would both score with a man up at the 8:33 and 7:56 marks to give Wilkes a 4-2 lead halfway through the quarter. Arcadia would answer with their own four straight goals in the first, earning goals at the 5:58, 3:37, and 3:07 marks while getting their fourth goal with just three seconds left to finish the first quarter with a 6-4 lead. Arcadia would outshoot Wilkes 10-9 

Breanne Fulling (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) would cut the lead just under a minute into the second quarter as she scored with 14:07 into the period to make it 6-5. Arcadia would make the lead two scores again as they would find the net at the 11:15 mark to make it 7-5. Both teams would not have luck for a good portion of the second quarter as they would each have turnovers for the next six minutes. Arcadia would eventually score at the 3:51 mark to go into the half with an 8-5 lead. The Knights would hold the Colonels to two shots while attempting 10 of their own in the quarter.

The Knights would come out to the second half and have the only two scores in the third period at the 11:38 and 9:44 marks to go up 10-5 through the third quarter. Arcadia would take seven shots while Wilkes only attempted four.

McDonough would try to cut the lead with her second goal of the night at the 13:57 mark to make it 10-6, Arcadia would score three in a row at 11:31, 10:25, and 9:17 of the fourth quarter to build a 13-7 lead. Fulling would also get her second goal at the 6:20 mark to try and make one last push, but two more goals at 2:30 and 1:32 in the fourth quarter would seal the game for the Knights. Cobham would add another goal with 20 seconds left, but the Colonels would drop their conference opener to Arcadia 15-8.

Arcadia would finish the game with 33 shots with 23 of them on goal. The Knights would go 16-20 on clears and have 25 ground balls. Wilkes would take 22 shots with 16 on goal as they went 12-14 on clears. The Colonels would also win 16 draw controls to Arcadia's 11.

McDonough, Cobham, and Fulling all had two goals apiece while Bernardi and Pedana scored once. Alexis Guttilla (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) had two assists on the night with Bernardi following behind with one. Fulling had five draw controls while Cobham earned four. Samantha Scott (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) had eight saves on the night while leading the team with five ground balls.

Wilkes come back home as they look to bounce back in MAC Freedom action when they host Delaware Valley University at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m.
