Strong Fourth Quarter Pushes Delaware Valley Past Wilkes Women's Lacrosse in MAC Freedom Play
 
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team fell 17-12 against the Delaware Valley University Aggies in their first home Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Colonels move to 3-8 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. The Aggies move to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the MAC Freedom.
 
Wilkes was able to score the first two goals of the quarter, both within the first five minutes. The first goal came from Caitlin McDonough (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) after she picked up a ground ball on a failed clear. The second goal came from Abby Miller (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) off a free position shot. Delaware Valley then went on to score five goals in the quarter, leading the Colonels 5-2 going into the second quarter. The Colonels had four shots in the quarter and goalkeeper Samantha Scott (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) earned three saves on eight shots on goal.
 
The Aggies had nine shots in the first quarter and goalkeeper Caroline Berg earned two saves on four shots on goal.
 
The Colonels came out strong in the second quarter, outscoring the Aggies 6-2 giving them a 8-7 lead at half. Maleah Cobham (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) had three of the goals for Wilkes, with two of them assisted by Brooklyn Pedana (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area). McDonough and Sam Mullen (Dover, PA/York Catholic) each had one goal in the quarter as well as Breanne Fulling (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) with an assist from Mullen. The Colonels had eight shots in the second quarter and Scott added four saves on six shots on goal.
 
Delaware Valley had eight shots in the second quarter and Berg added one save on seven shots on goal.
 
The third quarter was even scoring with both teams earning four goals, sending Wilkes into the fourth quarter with a 12-11 lead over the Aggies. McDonough had two goals in the quarter and Cobham and Pedana each had one with assists from Miller and Emilee Magill (North Prairie, WI/Kettle Moraine Global). Wilkes had seven shots in the third quarter and Scott added one save on five shots on goal.
 
The Aggies had six shots in the third quarter and Berg added one save on five shots on goal.
 
Wilkes was unable to connect in the fourth quarter while Delaware Valley took over the lead and sealed their 17-12 win after scoring six unanswered goals. The Colonels had three shots in the fourth quarter and Scott had two saves on eight shots on goal.
 
Delaware Valley had 11 shots in the fourth quarter and Berg added one save on one shot on goal.
 
The Colonels had a total of 22 shots in the game, led by Cobham with six and McDonough and Pedana each with five. Scott had a total of 10 saves in the game on 27 shots on goal. The Aggies had a total of 34 shots in the game and Berg had a total of five saves on 17 shots on goal.
 
Wilkes had 19 draw controls in the game compared to Delaware Valley's 14. Fulling had the most draw controls in the game for the Colonels with eight, followed by Cobham and Miller each with four. The Colonels were 8-13 on clears and the Aggies were 12-21.
 
The Colonels had a total of 13 ground balls with Scott earning five of them. The Aggies had a total of 26 ground balls.
 
The Wilkes women's lacrosse team continues MAC Freedom action on Wednesday when they travel to Hoboken, N.J. to take on Stevens Institute of Technology for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
