Late Rutgers-Camden Goal Leads to 1-1 Draw for Wilkes Men's Soccer

EDWARDSVILLE, PA – A late Rutgers-Camden goal in the 90th minute of play led the Wilkes University Men's Soccer team to a 1-1 draw in a non-conference game with the Scarlet Raptors on Saturday night.

The draw brought the Colonel's record to 1-2-2, while the Scarlet Raptors went to 3-2-1.

It was a gritty first 18 minutes of play as both teams drew several fouls, resulting in back-and-forth gameplay at midfield.

Play began to open up in the 20th minute when Colonels' goalkeeper Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) made a point-blank save on Miguel Graterol. Both teams broke up attacks and kept each other's scoring attempts at bay. Both teams registered a pair of wide shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Heading into halftime, the game remained scoreless.

Kinzler was put to work early in the second half, stopping a shot from Joseph Lodise at 48:12.

The Colonels put together an offensive outburst in the 66th minute as Josey Williamson (Oley Valley, PA/Oley Valley) fired a shot in on Rutgers-Camden goalkeeper Sean Boen, who made the save.

Shortly thereafter, Bone stopped a second attempt by Michael Buckholtz (Huntingtown, MD/Northern). Seth Marsteller (Coplay, PA/Whitehall) drew a penalty on the play, setting up Colin Schulmeister (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) to beat Boen to the lower right side, breaking the tie and giving Wilkes a 1-nil lead at 67:22.

Boen and Kinzler traded saves throughout the rest of the game up until the 90th minute. The Scarlet Raptors' offense desperately pushed the ball forward, looking for a last minute goal to knot the score at one apiece. Jason Angel finally found the back of the net at 89:05 when he sailed a shot past Kinzler's right-hand side. The 1-1 score would hold for the remaining 55 seconds, ending the game with a tie.

Wilkes registered five total shots on goal, led by Schulmeister who had three. Buckholtz and Williamson collected the other two shots. Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) made seven saves for the Colonels.

On the Rutgers-Camden side, Graterol sent two shots on goal while six other Scarlet Knights recorded shots of their own. Graterol made four saves in the draw.

The Colonels continue the homestand on Tuesday when they take on Swarthmore College. Kickoff at Bruggeworth Field is slated for 7:00 p.m.
