Wilkes Field Hockey Falls 2-0 at Susquehanna in Landmark Play
SELINSGROVE – Host Susquehanna University scored early in the first quarter then added an insurance tally late in the fourth on way to a 2-0 Landmark Conference victory over the Wilkes University field hockey team Saturday afternoon.
Wilkes suffered its first conference defeat dropping to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in Landmark play. Susquehanna improved to 6-2 overall and remained undefeated at 2-0 in league games.
Lexi Fumanti notched the eventual game-winner 9:47 into the first quarter when she found the back of the net off an assist from Katie Bucher.
The teams went scoreless over the next 45 minutes before Sophia Prata posted her fifth goal of the season with seven minutes left off a helper from Gracie Roush that put the game out of reach for the Colonels.
Susquehanna held an 8-2 shot advantage with seven coming on goal. Both of Wilkes' shots came in the first quarter of play. The River Hawks also held a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) finished with two saves for the Colonels in goal. Ashley Derrick recorded the win in the cage for Susquehanna making one stop.
Wilkes returns to non-conference play Wednesday when the Colonels travel to Elmira College for a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
