Wilkes Women's Soccer Draws with Susquehanna 0-0
EDWARDSVILLE – Wilkes University women's soccer kicked off their first Landmark Conference match with a nil-nil tie against Susquehanna University on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Bruggeworth Field.
The tie brought the Colonels' season record to 1-2-4 and gave them a 0-0-1 start to conference play. Susquehanna moved to 1-4-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the Landmark with the draw.
Colonels' goalkeeper
Hannah Landis (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) was first tested at 8:29, making a save on a shot by Mikela Florio.
Brooke Snopkowski's (Havertown, PA/Haverford) return from injury made an immediate impact for the Colonels as she found open space and fired a shot on River Hawks goalie Kayleigh Saboja, who made the save at 9:59.
Landis made her second save of the day on Emily Wertz at 31:18, keeping the game knotted in a scoreless tie.
The rainy conditions didn't help either offense as both teams struggled to maintain possession in their respective offensive zones.
Wilkes had a late scoring opportunity with just 26 seconds remaining in the first half, however Saboja stopped a low shot by
Taylor Anthony (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex).
Heading into halftime, the score remained nil-nil.
Landis played a major role in keeping the River Hawks off the board, making three critical saves in the ladder 45 minutes of play.
Both teams went back and forth but were unable to crack each others' defenses, resulting in a scoreless match through 89 minutes.
Wilkes put together a quality scoring chance in the dying seconds of the game when
Aliah Balch (Paupack, PA/Wallenpaupack Area) collected the ball right in front of the net and attempted to chip it past Saboja, who made the final save of the game.
Snopkowski, Balch, Anthony and
Taylor Gollin (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) all recorded shots on goal for the Colonels as Landis stopped all five shots by the River Hawks.
Wertz and Florio led all Susquehanna players with two shots on goal each. Saboja made four saves in the contest.
Wilkes remains at home on Wednesday when they take on Marywood University at Bruggeworth Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
