Straub, Anthony goals lead Wilkes Women's Soccer to First Home Win of the Season over Marywood 2-1

EDWARDSVILLE - Madison Straub (Franklin, NJ/Franklin) and Taylor Anthony's (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) first goals of the year helped propel the Wilkes University women's soccer team to its first home win of the season in the final non-conference game of the year, 2-1 against the Marywood University Pacers.

Wilkes improved to 2-2-4 on the year, while Marywood fell to 2-5-1.

The Colonels dominated the attack in the first half, registering eight shots to only one for Marywood before Straub elevated to meet Taylor Gollin's (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) corner and head in the first score of the game in the 42nd minute. This was Gollin's first collegiate assist, registered a week after her first collegiate goal against Alvernia. The Colonels went into the break with a goal in hand and momentum in the match. Lauren Sweeney (West Chester, PA/West Chester Rustin) was only called into action once, making a single save in the first half.

Marywood came out in the second half with urgency to equalize, and found it in the 59th minute as Riley Mulherin headed home a corner by Josephine Sorce to make it a 1-1 game. The Pacers found more offense in the second half, as they put up four shots in the second half, but the Colonels offensive pressure wasn't to be outdone. In the 73rd minute, Anthony danced around the Pacers' defender and fired her shot home to restore the Colonels lead 2-1. That goal was enough to give the Colonels their first home win of the year heading into Landmark Conference play.

The Colonels out-shot the Pacers 17-5 in the contest. Holly Feese (State College, PA/State College Area) led the team in shots with four. Sweeney only made one save in the match.

Mulherin led Marywood with the lone goal, her one shot of the game. On the defensive side, goalkeeper Mila Elash made seven saves.

The Colonels return to action on Saturday, September 30 when they travel to face Moravian in a Landmark Conference clash. Kick off is set for 3:30 p.m.
