Wilkes Men's Soccer Draws with Hartwick 2-2
EDWARDSVILLE – Ninety minutes of play wasn't enough to decide a victor at Bruggeworth Field Tuesday night as the Wilkes University men's soccer team drew with Hartwick College by a final score of 2-2.
The draw pushed the Colonels' record to 3-2-3 while Hartwick moved to 4-2-3 on the season.
Wilkes goalkeeper
Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) made an early appearance on the stat sheet, stopping a shot by Nick Nowak just 4:19 into the contest.
The Colonels then found themselves with a golden scoring opportunity at 16:35 when
Herbert Ramirez (Highstown, NJ/Highstown) drew a penalty while bringing the ball towards goal. On the ensuing kick, he faked a shot to the left side while beating Hawks' goalkeeper Dante Gesamondo to the right. Ramirez's third goal of the season gave Wilkes a 1-nil advantage.
Kinzler kept Hartwick off the board again in the 32nd minute of action when he scooped up a low shot from Jake Daly.
The Colonels and Hawks went back and forth through the remainder of the first half but were unable to put another goal on the board, leaving Wilkes with a 1-nil lead heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break,
Matthew Conti (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School) took over in goal for the Colonels and was tested almost immediately. Hartwick's Timmy McQueeney found open space in front of the net and fired a shot on Conti, who smothered the ball at 46:33.
Seth Marsteller (Coplay, PA/Whitehall) responded shortly thereafter with a shot of his own in the 52nd minute which was turned away by Gesamondo.
Andres Ordonez Acosta evened the score for the Hawks at 64:14 after collecting a cross from McQueeney and sending the ball past Conti's left-hand side to make it a 1-1 contest.
The score would not hold for long, as a pass from
Joseph Jackson (West Chester, PA/Bayard Ruston) found
Xavier Guerreiro (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) inside the penalty box. Guerreiro buried his shot to the top right corner of the goal for his fifth goal of the season, giving Wilkes a 2-1 advantage.
This lead also proved to be short-lived when a mishandled ball by Conti dribbled into the Colonels' goal at 74:23 to knot the score at 2-2.
Wilkes responded with shots in the 78th, 79th, 86th and 90th minutes of play but were unable to break the tie. The score would hold through 90 minutes, ending the match in a 2-2 draw.
Ramirez and
Landon Kelly (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus Senior High School) both recorded two shots on goal, while Kinzler and Conti put together a combined eight saves in their outing.
Ordonez Acosta led the Hartwick offense with five shots and a goal. On the defensive side, Gesamondo put up four saves in the draw.
The Colonels return to action on Saturday when they travel to Moravian to take on the Greyhounds. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
