Wilkes Women's Volleyball Sweeps Clarks Summit University

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team were helped by 16 service aces on its way to a 3-0 sweep (25-5, 25-13, 25-19) of Clarks Summit University in a non-conference match Tuesday night at the Marts Center.

Wilkes improved to 5-8 overall on the year with tonight's win. Clarks Summit dropped to 1-14 overall.

The Defenders scored the first point of the opening set, but Wilkes would go on a 17-0 run led by four aces by Alexis Reedy (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra Area). From there Wilkes cruised to a 25-5 victory as the team hit .429 on 10 kills with just one error on 21 total attacks.

Wilkes took a 6-0 lead to open the second set led by two Ally Sheridan (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) aces. An ace by Ava Wahlers (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) pushed the Colonels lead to 11-3. From there the two sides traded small runs until Wilkes finished the set on two Jenna Baron (Nanticoke, PA/Greater Nanticoke Area) aces to win 25-13.

The Colonels were up 5-2 in the third set when Lylah Oswald (Wyalusing, PA/Wyalusing) collected a kill followed by an ace by Baron and another kill by Oswald to put Wilkes ahead 8-2. A Wahlers kill had the Colonels ahead 19-9 but the Defenders responded with nine of the next 10 points to make it 20-18. The Blue and Gold would score five of the final six points to win the set 25-19 and sweep the match. A block by Rachael Anderson (Canmore, AB/West Island College) and Baron earned match point.

Oswald led Wilkes with a career-high eight kills. Allie Murie (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and Wahlers finished with four kills. Anderson had a career-high 14 assists as she played the second and third sets. Alexa Cassel (Mount Joy, PA/Lower Dauphin) had seven assists in the first set. Reedy led Wilkes with four aces. Sheridan and Baron added three each. At the net Baron had a strong game with four blocks over the final two sets. Ali Yordy (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield Area), Sheridan, and Anderson led the Colonels with four digs each.

Chloe Burhans led Clarks Summit with four kills. Haley Bush had five assists, and Melanie Stabler eight digs.

The Colonels hit the road for a Saturday tri-match in Chambersburg, Pa. Wilkes is set to face the host Wilson College at 11:00 a.m. and then the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford at 1:00 p.m.
