Wilkes Men’s Soccer Drops Road Contest to Ithaca

Wilkes Men's Soccer Drops Road Contest to Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Wilkes University men's soccer team fell to Ithaca College at Carp Wood Field Monday afternoon by a score of 5-0.

The loss was the first of the year for the Colonels, who now stand at 1-1-0 on the season.

Ithaca started off the game with sustained pressure in the Wilkes zone, resulting in several corner kicks. The Colonel defenders stood strong, however, interrupting centering passes and keeping the majority of play to the perimeter of the penalty box.

The Wilkes defense was helped out by their goalkeeper, Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial), who scooped up a Bombers' free kick shot at 14:59 into the contest.

A foul at the top of the penalty arc proved to be costly for the Colonels, as Ithaca's Leo Morris sent a shot over the defending line and past Kinzler's left-hand side at 25:09 to take the lead 1-0.

Just under three minutes later, the Bombers doubled their lead as Ikey Borden found himself one-on-one against Kinzler, slotting the ball to the bottom right corner of the goal at 28:06, making it 2-0.

Ithaca continued to pressure the Colonels' defense and capitalize on their opportunities. Drew Warren buried a shot to give the Bombers a 3-0 lead at 32:07 into the first half.

With less than 3 minutes remaining in the half, Ithaca's quick transitional play gave them another quality scoring chance and a 4-0 lead heading into the half.

After the second half opened with lots of back-and-forth play, Ithaca extended their lead on a Jack Nelson goal at 67:30 into the game.

Kinzler finished with four saves on the day.

The Colonels return to the pitch on Wednesday when they will travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference matchup with the Nittany Lions.
