Wilkes Women's Basketball Falls to No. 9 Catholic in Landmark Play

WILKES-BARRE – No. 9 Catholic University kept its undefeated record in tact as the visiting Cardinals posted an 80-39 Landmark Conference victory over the Wilkes University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.

Wilkes fell to 7-20 overall and 3-7 in Landmark contests. Catholic continued its unbeaten streak moving to 17-0 overall and 10-0 in conference games.

Catholic jumped out to a double digit lead in the first half thanks to its hot shooting from behind the arc. Sarah White notched four of the Cardinals five threes in the first half taking a 26-10 lead after one. Catholic then outscored Wilkes by five in the second frame to take a 42-21 advantage at the break. Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) topped the Colonels with nine first half points, including a three-pointer and transition layup to end the second quarter.

Wilkes enjoyed its best quarter of the game in the third as the Colonels scored 13 points in the frame thanks to scores from Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson), Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) and Brenna Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area).

Matos topped all Wilkes scorers with 10 points and seven rebounds. Babcock and Shober combined for 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Catholic outscored Wilkes 36-15 off the bench on way to its tenth conference win. Anna Scoblick finished with a team-high 17 points while White followed with 16 points.

Wilkes continues Landmark play Wednesday with a match up at Lycoming College starting at 7:00 p.m. in Williamsport, Pa. The Colonels fell 57-52 in the two teams first meeting back in December.
