Wilkes Women's Basketball Upended at Lycoming 64-52

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Host Lycoming College saw four players reach double figures as the Warriors upended the Wilkes University women's basketball team 64-52 Wednesday night in Lamade Gymnasium.

Wilkes fell to 7-11 overall and 3-8 in Landmark play. Lycoming improved to 10-8 overall and 4-7 in conference games.

Lycoming opened up a 9-5 lead midway through the first quarter before an inside score from Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) and three-pointer by Taylor Simpson (Dunmore, PA/Lawrenceville School) cut the lead to one at 11-10 with 3:40 left in the opening stanza. Lycoming kept its slim lead throughout the rest of the frame, never leading by more than three points.

The Warriors took their largest lead of the first half early in the second quarter as an Alicia Goldenziel layup made it 24-17 Lycoming. Emma Stout (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) notched back-to-back hoops for Wilkes to keep the Colonels within striking distance trailing by just three. Lycoming used two shots from long range to build its advantage back to nine at 32-23 before buckets from Evanosky and two from Shober brought Wilkes to within three at 35-32 at the break.

Lycoming used a big third quarter to extend its lead to 14 points and take command of the game outscoring the Colonels 19-8 over the frame. Wilkes made one last push in the fourth quarter as Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) scored in transition and Evanosky notched her tenth point of the game to cut the Lycoming advantage to seven at 59-52 with 4:28 remaining. Wilkes was unable to score over the final three minutes and Lycoming added five free throws over the stretch to secure the 12-point conference home win.

Evanosky led all Wilkes scorers with 10 points and five rebounds. Matos followed with nine points and six boards. Shober chipped in eight points and six rebounds.

Kami Abdo topped four Lycoming players in double figures with a game-high 14 points including 3-for-6 from long range.

The Colonels continue Landmark play Saturday with a road trip to Juniata College. Wilkes was a 63-47 winner over the Eagles in the teams' first meeting in mid-December. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
